1. Stein Holding Competition (Masskrugstemmen)!

“Masskrugstemmen” (pronounced MAHSS-kroog-stem-men) is a Bavarian game at Oktoberfest. The name loosely translates to the lifting of a liter mug of beer. Participants hold a 1-liter Stein with one arm, completely stretched out and parallel to the floor, with the goal of holding the Stein up for as long as possible.

Simple Principle to Follow: It’s a balance between the right technique and strength, and the full 1-liter “Mass” weighs about 5 lbs. Join the ultimate test of strength and endurance with Masskrugstemmen this Oktoberfest 2024 every Saturday at 7 PM from October 2nd to October 23rd! This competition requires participants to hold 1-liter steins with outstretched arms. Women use one stein, while men use two, following the organizer’s rules!

FREE ENTRY: Limited to the first 18 men and 18 women at each event. Entry includes a “Musskrug” quantity of beer and one drink ticket for the beverage of your choice.

Rules and Regulations!

  • To participate in the competition, use a 1-liter glass stein with a handle.
  • Fill the stein to the 1-liter mark.
  • Grip the stein by the handle without placing your thumb on top of it.
  • Your thumb must rest on the other fingers.
  • You may hold your pinky fingers outside of the handle.
  • It’s okay to arch your back, but excessive leaning is not allowed.
  • Hold the stein so that the front faces away from you, not sideways.
  • Keep the stein in front of you, with the arm holding it close to parallel with the floor and extended straight with minimal bending at the elbow.
  • Your off-hand should remain at your side and not be used to support your body.
  • Any rule infraction will result in a strike. Three strikes lead to elimination. If beer spills or drips from the stein, regardless of the number of strikes, the competitor is eliminated.
  • Competitors must not touch any structures, objects, or people during the competition.
  • Competitors must stay within their personal area and should only move as necessary to make adjustments for proper form during the competition.

Attention- Before joining this game, it’s important to understand the potential risks, including cramps, muscle tension, and possible injuries. With plenty of other fun Oktoberfest activities, why let muscle cramps ruin your experience? Choose wisely!

What will Winners get? Winners from each week will enjoy a $150 cash prize, beverage tickets, and an official Oktoberfest Stein!

2. Barrel Rolling Race (Fassrollen)!

In this race, teams will roll empty wooden barrels around a course, and the fastest time wins. Points will be deducted for straying off course and knocking over spectators, but bonus points will be awarded for rolling in German Lederhosen/Oktoberfest attire. Each team consists of four people (2 men and 2 women) who compete in this relay race.

Rules and Regulations

  • Each team will be equipped with a standard-sized beer barrel.
  • The race kicks off as one team member uses their hands to roll the barrel along the course.
  • Once the barrel reaches the halfway mark, it’s time for the second team member to take over and lead the way to the finish line.

Will your team be the first to triumphantly roll their barrel across the finish line? Super excited? Get yourself registered if you want to take part in this game to experience the biggest fun of this festival!

Always Consider! Neither Oktoberfest organizers nor any sponsor can be responsible for any injuries that occur in connection with any game! It is always suggested to take part in games if you compete the game strongly!

What will the winners get? Winners receive prizes like beer, gift certificates, or Oktoberfest merchandise.

3. Finger Wrestling- In German (Fingerhakeln)!

Fingerhakeln, also known as finger pulling, is not your typical thumb war!  Two people face off, trying to pull their opponent over a line on the table. Any finger can be used, but most participants use their middle finger. This sport is taken very seriously, and competitors train rigorously. Some athletes even do one-fingered pull-ups or crush tennis balls with their hands. Injuries and finger dislocations are common, so this is not a sport to be taken lightly. At-home participation is probably not encouraged, but it’s interesting nonetheless!

Entry Ticket? Finger Wrestling (Fingerhakeln) at Oktoberfest doesn’t require an entry ticket. How exciting! The participants are grouped by age and weight, and it’s a great opportunity for men to showcase their strength.

Rules and Regulations!

  • Two opponents sit opposite each other at a table and attempt to pull the other person towards them using only one finger (except the thumb).
  • They hook their chosen fingers into a leather strap and try to pull their opponent across the table.
  • Each player has a catcher positioned behind them to catch them if they fall, as well as a chairman and two referees.

A Helpful Tip- Don’t play under the influence of alcohol, as it impairs judgment and increases injury risk! And one more thing! Try to avoid sudden jerks or moves as they may lead to strain or cause finger injuries.

4. Oktoberfest BeerStein Race!

The Beerstein race is an Oktoberfest game to see who can hold the most full-liter beers without spilling a drop. If you’ve mastered the art of holding one stein in the Masskrugstemmen, it’s time to take it up a notch. Participate in the stein carry race and challenge yourself to carry as many full-liter beers as possible without spilling a drop.

You can even set a Guinness World Record, like Matthias Volkl from Deggendorf, who achieved and earned a place in the Guinness World Records. He carried 27 full beer steins, weighing 137 pounds in total, for a distance of 131 feet using only his two hands and strong arms. At 10:00 on the morning of September 12th, 2016, Volkl loaded up 29 steins filled with beer to attempt a Guinness record at a famous beer hall. Despite spilling two steins along the way, his final count of 27 steins surpassed the previous record of 25, securing his place in the record books.

Rules and Regulations

  • Fill 34-ounce steins with beer.
  • The player picks up as many as they can.
  • A helper stacks additional full steins on top.
  • The player has to carry all the steins 45 yards and place them down on the table at the finish line without spilling any beer.

5. Dachshund Dash Race!

The Dachshund Dash at Oktoberfest is a fun competition featuring Dachshund dogs. These dogs sprint towards the finish line to be crowned the fastest Dachshund. Participants are encouraged to dress their dogs in costumes, adding a playful element to the race.

Entry to Race? The Dachshund Dash is free to enter, but pre-registration is required, and an admission ticket ($15) must be purchased separately. (Your “wiener” dog gets in free.)

Rules and Regulations!

  • Dog names will be called twice before the race. You forfeit the race if your dog is not at the gate at race time. Two people must be available during the race: one at the gate and one at the finish line.
  • Races are run in heats, with no more than six dogs racing on an 80-foot long course.
  • You may use a toy, ball, or treat to entice your dog, but you must stay at each end until your dog comes to you. The toy or treat may not be thrown or tossed. You may bounce the ball, but remember, bouncing is not throwing.
  • No loud devices, drones, hot air balloons, leaf blowers, laser pointers, or anything that may distract other dogs/owners are allowed.
  • Your dog may step out of bounds but must re-enter and completely cross the finish line within the boundaries without being grabbed.
  • The dog will be disqualified if the handler touches the dog before completely crossing the finish line.

A Helpful Hint – You are not allowed to run alongside the dog, but you can wear Trachten (traditional German clothing), a clown suit, or even that Ninja Turtle costume you bought for Halloween if you think it will help!

What will Winners get?

The winners of the wiener dog races will receive the following prizes:

First place – $350 Fest Card and a wiener dog hat crown (must be worn throughout Oktoberfest)

Second place – $200 Fest Card and a one-of-a-kind Oktoberfest logo dog bowl

Third place – $100 Fest Card and the use of the wiener dog outhouse.

6. Sausage-Eating Contest (Wurst-Essen-Wettbewerb)!

A sausage eating contest (Wurst-Essen-Wettbewerb) is a competitive eating event where participants try to consume the most sausages in a set amount of time.

Does it have an entry ticket? Sausage eating contests typically require a small registration fee of around $5-$10 to cover expenses. Verify the entry fee and any additional costs through the event website or by contacting the organizer.

Rules and Regulations!

  • Gather participants around a table, preferably a long one, with each person having a plate piled high with traditional German sausages.
  • When the whistle blows, the participants should start eating as many hot dogs as they can within a specific time limit, usually 1-5 minutes.
  • They must eat the sausages using only their hands and mouth, and no utensils are allowed.
  • The person who consumes the highest number of sausages in the set time becomes the Wurstessen Champion.

Warning! Sausage-eating contests can be dangerous, and there have been numerous cases of participants choking or becoming ill after consuming large amounts of food. Eat slowly and carefully, and pay attention to your body if you start to feel unwell.

What will Winners get?

Winners of sausage-eating contests (Wurst-Essen-Wettbewerb) usually claim bragging rights and a prize, which can include cash, gift certificates, event-specific merchandise, or even the champion’s weight in sausages!

7. A New Game this Year! Wife Carrying Race! Excited?

Oktoberfest always introduces new games for everyone to enjoy. In 2024, they will feature a game called “Carry Your Wife on Your Shoulders and Run.” Now’s the time to hope your wife’s weight isn’t too heavy so you can carry her easily!

Here’s a message to all wives: Consider starting a diet to lose some weight so your husband can run faster and win the race!

Rules and Regulations!

  • This Oktoberfest game for couples doesn’t need you to be legally married.
  • The carried competitor is not required to wear a helmet.
  • The only special equipment allowed for the carrier is a belt, which is optional.
  • There is no minimum weight limit for the female competitor.
  • In the first stage of the competition, competitors run the course two at a time while being timed. The two fastest teams from the initial heats move on to the final heat, which may or may not be timed.
  • If a competitor drops their couple, their team will receive a five-second penalty added to their time. Furthermore, teams must carry the wife throughout the entire course; failure to do so will result in disqualification.

A Secret Strategy! You can change your moves as it is not necessary to carry only on your shoulders! You may choose the Estonian Carry method, where the wife hangs upside-down with her legs around the husband’s shoulders, holding onto his waist!

Today, it’s a popular game enjoyed by many, and you can even bring the excitement home with your own Hammer-Schlagen kit! • Men can use only one hand, while ladies have the choice of using both hands.
  • Hold the hammer behind the red safety line.

  • The arc of the hammer swing should not be higher than the player’s ear.
  • If the nail bends, the player can change their position around the table for the next turn, or the nail can be straightened and counted as a turn.
  • To win, the nail must be flush with or below the surface of the wood.
  • No body parts or foreign objects (including bottles and glasses) are permitted on the table.
